Bollards International enhances Cromer development with 'heritage' railings

Bollards International has now completed a prestigious contract for the supply of posts and railings for the Cromer [North Norfolk] Seafront Enhancement Programme. The main objective of this major investment in Cromers heritage is to "complement and protect the Victorian and Edwardian character of the town and seafront."

The Programme includes improvements to the towns promenade and the strengthening of the piers substructure, with improvements to visitor facilities and disabled access. An important part of this regeneration is the installation of replacement cast iron posts and railings at the entrance to the pier.

However, in view of the highly corrosive effect of the salt atmosphere on cast iron, architect Shaun Ruffles was shown samples of Bollards Internationals polymer bollards. His subsequent recommendation to the North Norfolk Heritage Officer was that the specification be revised in favour of the non-corrosive, easy maintenance polymer bollards.

"Cromer Pier is one of the jewels of the North Norfolk coast," comments Barrie Colvin, Managing Director of Bollards International. "It was one of the first to be built in the 20th Century, and its Pavilion houses the last traditional end of pier summer show in the country."

"It was imperative that, as an integral part of the Cromer Seafront Enhancement programme, our posts and railings should reflect the unique ambience of Cromer Pier. They provide Cromer with a robust and attractive safety barrier at the entrance to the pier, and a long-term solution to the on-going problems of weakening caused by the constant exposure of cast iron to the salty atmosphere."
